New YHZ aircraft firefighting vehicles faster, safer

Halifax Stanfield International is unveiling two new Aircraft Firefighting Rescue vehicles today.

Firefighters have been receiving training on the two Rosenbauer Panthers since they arrived at the airport a few weeks ago from Minnesota.

The new vehicles are larger, have more horsepower and come with state-of-the-art technology like thermal imaging cameras and onboard computers.

The airport authority says the new trucks will make its emergency response capabilities faster and safer, especially in fighting fuselage fires.

One truck is equipped with a 50-foot High Reach Extendable Turret designed to pierce the fuselage and flood it with foam, doing away with the need for hoses and ladders.

The second vehicle includes a Compressed Air Foam System that adds compressed air to the normal foam solution, giving the vehicle a greater reach of stream and better insulating quality from the effects of heat during a fire.

The airport says the new technology has proven to put out fires faster and more efficiently.
